Some of the older hams whose careers included the "AM", or amplitude modulation equipment popular after the second world war will remember that the transmitting equipment was really big and heavy, and if you wanted to get on the air with a kilowatt, you pretty much designed and built rack-mounted gear. I'm not so sure hefting all those heavy modulation transformers around would be a fond memory of the good old days, but you can bet home brewers got their exercise - by weight lifting!
